Ojcowie Kościoła porównują tę praktykę do kąpieli po długiej podróży: ogrzewa serce i oczyszcza duszę – musi jej zatem towarzyszyć poważny rachunek sumienia.
Życie w jaskini jest proste, zjednoczone: idziesz, aby uporządkować swoje życie, aby żyć zgodnie z naturą. Porządkowanie życia jest typowym dla Ignacego określeniem, Ćwiczenia Duchowe nazywane są właśnie wszystkimi sposobami przygotowania duszy do usunięcia skutków nieuporządkowania (por. Ćwiczenia Duchowe 1).

The cradle of Spiritual Exercises, the cave in Manresa is now transformed into a chapel. Unfortunately, with all this baroque, you need some faith to see the cave at all!
And so many caves of various hermits have been turned into a place of worship. Much remains in the natural state, but only a cross or plaque reminds us that in this place the saint spent the time of spiritual maturation.
And first we ask ourselves: why were the caves so attractive among the hermits? Why did the cave attract certain Inigo di Loyola? The first motivation is undoubtedly practical. Apart from human dwellings, the cave provides the necessary protection from the sun or rain. However, its appearance is not very pleasant. It covers the horizon, and the boredom of the naked stone appears in the eyes. Strange, but it is this emptiness, this absence of impressions that attracted the hermits: the need for loneliness and inner and outer silence.
The cave serves to restore the harmony between external and internal life. Hermits have been keen followers of the biblical examples of forty-day retreats. The Fathers of the Church compare this practice to a bath after a long journey: it warms the heart and purifies the soul – it must therefore be accompanied by a serious examination of conscience.
Life in the cave is simple, united: you go to organize your life to live in harmony with nature. Organizing life is a typical term for Ignatius, Spiritual Exercises are called just all the ways of preparing the soul to remove the effects of disorder (see Spiritual Exercises 1).
